9rules - SXSW Web Awards
9rules won Best Community/Wiki and Bryan won Best Blog. There aren’t words to describe my happiness. I would do a podcast but my voice is jacked. See….
Mike let me know that 9rules and Bryan won. My reaction at 2am? Jumping up and down screaming “YES!”. I don’t think Bryan thought he was going to win so I am really happy for him.
Then the bad news…Scrivs is sick. I looked at some of the pictures from SXSW and noticed a couple of things:
1) Scrivs wasn’t in as many as I thought.
2) He didn’t look like he felt well.
It sucks to get sick right before a conference. Hope you’re feeling better soon Scrivs. Mike and Matt accepted the award, dedicated the award to Scrivs, and got the attending 9rulers onstage. Outstanding - someone better have photos of that. Yeah, I said better. It’s a moment dang it.
One thing that surprised me was the lack of updates coming out of SXSW. No live blogging. I never noticed that before…perhaps because I honestly didn’t have a reason to care. I noticed it this year…ouch.

Congratz! I could see why Bryan might have thought he wasn’t going to win. Wasn’t he up against that Mint guy? The best man won!
Scrivs - you gotta get better man. Remember, your room at SXSW is supposed to serve certain purposes…LOL.

Tyme Says:
Last I heard (around 2am) he was passed out, armed with meds so he should be doing better. Before anyone asks (unless Aaron read it some place else) Matt O. is telling what happened with Scrivs and some “trouble” he got into. I’ll be reading it right along with you guys - no clue what happened.
I was told that Scrivs has a throat infection. He was sick before he left for Austin (notice in my entry I said BEFORE the conference) so it wasn’t anything he did while he was there.

There’s an update on Matt’s site. Scrivs is listening to an interview so I would assume he’s ok. It would bore him to death to sit in a hotel room while everyone is out and about.

Charmyn Says:
I hate it when people do that. Take 10 minutes, type the thing out and be done.
Of course it’s my fault for caring about strangers. He was assaulted, almost goes to jail, Scrivs was in the hospital…continue it later? I’m not looking anymore.

Matthew Oliphant Says:
Charmyn, I understand. But I will blog it as I have time. Like I said, SXSW is people. Which is likely why you aren’t seeing much blogging as the conference goes.

When Tyme mentioned Scrivs was sick I swear my heart dropped. Never met the guy, just recently started reading him but the word hospital had me seriously worried.
Then I read about Matt being assaulted. Never read Matt before but I became concerned about him too. I was thankful you didn’t go Tyme and said a quick prayer Mike was ok…who I just “met” around the same time as Scrivs.
Got me thinking. There are some people I’ve worked with for years that I am not as concerned about.
Tyme, this is YOUR fault. Got us caring about completely strangers. Good to hear they are all ok.

As yourself the following questions:
1) If any other network won the awards would we give a sh*t? No.
2) If anyone in the other networks were hurt/ill/etc. would we give a sh*t? No.
3) If any of the 9rules (yes I noted the small r) won something would we care? Yes.
4) If these same people were in another network would we care? No.
We care about Tyme because we lived live with her. We got to “know” her. She introduced us to 9rules and now we “care” about them too.
Tyme how the hell did you do that?
Posted on March 13th, 2006 at 5:07 pm
Charmyn Says:
I feel you Matt but what is shocking to me is that I care! When exactly did I start caring? Like Felix said there are people I work with that if in the same situation my reaction would be “oh well”.
When did I get so loyal? I just heard about 9rules a couple of months ago. How DID Tyme do that?
Posted on March 13th, 2006 at 5:13 pm
Andrea Vander Says:
Easy answer. She wrote about something that touched you. It drew your attention, she gained your trust. Some were lucky enough to hang out with her. She’s not just a blogger, she’s a real person. She’s not just “online”.
When her and Jeremy did their podcast I started following what he did. When they stopped, I dropped his site from my blogroll.
Don’t we all do this? Isn’t that how online partnerships start?

Odd this conversation is happening. Tyme wrote about Dave Winer’s entry that he’s going to stop blogging. People are upset about that because they care. They “like” him.
We like Tyme, she likes 9rules, we like 9rules unless given a reason not to.

Since this is about 9rules, I noticed the leaf on a site that hasn’t been announced. The 5th letter in the name is “a”. The site has a gold background. Is it legit?
Everyone get better soon. Keep winning those awards!
Anyone else think that for Paul to go to the hospital he must have really been sick?

Marcia Says:
Alison you’re a trip but you’re right. I could care less about the other networks or their writers/members. B5 has these interviews, they’re so boring. ScrivsTyme had me laughing. Scrivs stopped being a boring bland designer and became a cool guy. Mike is really funny. Colin is geeky smart. Tyme you need to do a podcast with Matt.
Crap, Scrivs being sick is going to delay another episode of ScrivsTyme, with a little bit of Mike. Did anyone else think Mike was black?
Posted on March 13th, 2006 at 6:27 pm
Tyme Says:
Frank: ssshh…that’s a secret…but it’s legit (if we are thinking of the same blog).
It’s interesting reading your thoughts on what you like and dislike…or realizing you care about people you’ve never met. It happens a lot online. I’ve seen some people bump into a crisis, blog about it and get all the help they need. Most bloggers don’t have it. Most will never get that type of support. Knowing I’ve gained your trust and you appreciate what I write means much more to me than anything else.
/end sappy moment

Congrats on the wins. I think I’m going to take a break from the net this week. All the bloggers that were at SXSW are going to come back home and blog about it. Who wants to hear about it after the fact?
Posted on March 14th, 2006 at 11:11 am
Scrivs Says:
Figured I would drop on by since I haven’t been doing anything all week. Haven’t had a drink all week. Left my hotel room a hotel room a grand total of 4 times. I am hoped up on meds that aren’t taking the pain away and I’ll be damned don’t even get me high so I don’t know what’s going on. To top it off I have to fly today.
Anyways, thanks for the concern everyone. The doctors still don’t really know what’s up with me, but hopefully I am better by Friday because I have decided to go to Key West for the weekend to try and get a real vacation.
Oh and the purpose of my room this weekend? To allow Rundle to snore on my couch…
Couldn’t ask for a better friend though along with Matto who stayed with the female version of me in the hospital.

Charmyn they do stick together. Curious: Tyme you said Scrivs was sick before he left. How worried were you? Is your worrying one of those female traits you bring to 9rules?

Hope you’re back to normal soon Scrivs. You’re so sweet coming here to keep us updated. Tyme is right, you’re a sweetheart.

Feel better soon Scrivs and thanks for letting us know you’re okay. You’re considerate even when you’re not feeling well.
Rhonda: I’m not launching NewzCrawler until the end of the week. There are a handful of sites (like this one) I will visit manually. The rest can wait. I want to hear about Matt’s story because I found out about it during SXSW and he’s a 9Ruler. Of course there are some bloggers I would love to hear they got confronted about the things they wrote (like one who does interviews and starts them with nine).
Posted on March 14th, 2006 at 2:58 pm
Colby Says:
Get better soon Scrivs.
I agree with about hearing something after the fact. Scrivs said his stuff in a way that you feel sympathetic that he was sick, but you had to laugh that his purposes didn’t get served (sorry dude…maybe this weekend). Matt’s update was interesting but I have to admit he was the last 9Ruler I would expect to have a problem.
Most bloggers write something like “Met up with X, Y and Z. We went to Place A and had some beers. Then we went to Place B…”. Boring. It’s more link love than anything else.

Tyme you’re using Expression Engine, right? It would be sweet if you added the forum:

Posted on March 14th, 2006 at 3:33 pm
Tyme Says:
Scrivs - glad you’re feeling better.
Alison - I told Scrivs to get himself checked out before he left but he assured me he would be fine. So I moved on to Plan B: Mike will make sure he’s ok.
Andrea - a forum? For Scrivs and whatever? There is enough to say to put on a forum? About Scrivs? And whatever? *scratching head*
Posted on March 14th, 2006 at 3:42 pm
Felicia Says:
Actually it’s a darn good idea. You get flack when we go off-topic (Tyra). We could have a blast in the forums without interrupting the main part of your site.

I don’t know what it is but people are just more interesting when they hang out with Tyme. Example, Colin’s interview with Tyme. I’m not into tech so his sites are over my head. In his interview with Tyme his “coolness” and professionalism came out without being so geeky I couldn’t follow what he was saying. Obviously I am not the only one to notice it:
http://cdevroe.wordpress.com/2006/03/02/interview/#comments
He cracked a joke on Tyme’s site that had me laughing for a good minute:
http://abouttyme.com/index.php/abouttyme/comments/im_so_lucky/
Dude has a sense of humor, who knew?
I bet after-SXSW would be the ish if Tyme went and interviewing everyone.
Posted on March 14th, 2006 at 4:27 pm
Phillipe Says:
Not that you guys are boring, you just show different sides of yourselves.
Posted on March 14th, 2006 at 4:28 pm
Andrea Says:
I think it’s because of the readers on their sites. Like Scrivs said in ScrivsTyme there are things he can’t do on his own sites that he can pull off here.
The forum would be great. Tyme could post 9rules news, 9rules guy stuff, we could start our own conversations, yet it would not interefere with her site in any way.
Posted on March 14th, 2006 at 4:43 pm
Marcus Says:
The premise of this site is to present geeky things in a non-geeky way. Example, latest entry on Arrington’s site:
“This follows Fox Interactive President Ross Levinsohn’s dramatic announcement at a recent UTR conference that “they’ve acquired someone in this room,” leading to serious blog speculation as to who the acquired company might be. While NewRoo did not present at the event, it turns out that they were in fact in the room at the time.”
WTF is UTR? I know people in the industry knows what UTR is but the average person has no clue. If I was “really” interested I could Google it…not.
Tyme’s approach (she said over a Long Island Ice Tea or two) was to make geeky news understandable but she’s been sidetracked with 9rules drama lately and formatting the site the way she wants it.
It would be cool for there to be a spot where geeky people can hang out and stop being so damn geeky. And we can get news like everyone else without needing a degree (which I have, that’s so sad) to understand it.
Posted on March 14th, 2006 at 4:56 pm
Colby Says:
I think this is what UTR is:
http://www.undertheradarblog.com/
I found that by clicking a couple of pages deep on Arrington’s site, generating revenue of course. I hate that.
If you look around enough you’ll see it’s all about Arrington. That’s why I don’t read his site. He has a vested interest in some of the products he endorses. I don’t trust the guy because 90% of his entries are positive. Nothing sucks, what’s up with that?
Back on the off-topic topic: I think there would be value. News doesn’t have to be boring. Heck, Denton’s stuff is not polished but it’s being syndicated, isn’t it?
What would really be cool is if Tyme would make the 9rules member stuff not so geeky. They get exposure, Tyme gets content, we get information in English.
Posted on March 14th, 2006 at 5:27 pm
Phillipe Says:
It should be beyond 9rules. Web 2.0-1000.0. Technology. Blogging (not networks). Add interviews bringing out a side that isn’t normally seen…I think it would be a hit.
Guess we should ask Tyme since this is her site, huh?
Posted on March 14th, 2006 at 5:35 pm
Matthew Oliphant Says:
Done.
My apologies for it taking so long. Not sure hot interesting it will be, but like most things it had to be written.
And yes, I am the last one you’d think this would happen to. Hopefully it will balance by somehow aquiring a new laptop. It’s all about balance.
Posted on March 14th, 2006 at 5:43 pm
Tyme Says:
Matt - thanks for mentioning the update. I’m glad you are okay.
Colby - I don’t read his site for the same reason. An example, the guy that called him a racist. Arrington posted his “review” of the service and instead of giving constructive criticism (it sucks, here’s some suggestions to make it better) he gave it a positive spin.
Keep in mind that bloggers write for their audience and many bloggers write more complex because they want to appeal to a specific audience (non-newbies). Not saying that is what Arrington is doing but there are many bloggers that do.
The rest of you guys - are you trying to work me to death?
Seriously, I’m listening to your feedback. I’m lucky I have readers that are so um, vocal.
Posted on March 14th, 2006 at 6:40 pm
Marcia Says:
I can understand a blogger writing to a certain market. Many art sites don’t want to put up tutorials because they don’t want new people asking questions.
I love the idea of a forum and more non-geeky entries. I don’t get Web 2.0 (when did it start? when does it end? what comes next?) so I’d love Tyme to write about that. Arrington except honest, easy to understand and entertaining to read. Lots of interviews!

Scrivs glad you’re better. Matto, wow, no one should have to go thru what you went thru. Hope you guys don’t have to pay too much.
