Tyme’s Thoughts: SBC/Yahoo $14.95 DSL

Om Malik posted an article about SBC/Yahoo’s new low $14.95 a month limited-time offer for DSL service. Om feels this might be the last nail in dial-up’s coffin (for those locations that have DSL access). I’m skeptical because SBC/Yahoo’s promotions have been cheaper than providers like AOL for some time. I agree that this promotion (being this cheap) might make some AOL users scratch their heads and wonder why they use AOL. However, I know from experience that dial-up users feel they don’t use their computer enough to make it worth while for them to switch. $14.95 is a good price – what I consider a pivotal price for dial-up users to switch if the price after the 12 months isn’t too steep. So that leaves me wondering two things:

1) How much is the cost after 12 months?

2) What are my upload speeds (the newbies won’t even think to ask this)

I called to find out the answers. What the first person told me stunned me so much I called a second time to confirm. Of course I was told something different. The response for #2 was the same both times: upload speeds on the $14.95 promotion is 284 Kbps and 584 Kbps for the $24.99 promotion.
