Why is management important?
The burden of writing quality articles on a consistent basis is enough. You do not want to hear about management too. I feel your pain but there are benefits in management. Seriously, there is, particularly if you are a commercial blogger (the focus of this entry).
Competitive advantage
The more efficient a blogger is the more effectively a blogger can be competitive. The time will be there to write quality articles, stay on top of what is happening in their niche, responding to comments and interacting in the community. Effective and efficient has value.
This applies to non-commercial bloggers. If the goal is to have readers unless you start a site no one else has, then you have competition. You will need a competitive edge. Copying what has already been done will not take you very far. Determining how to improve your chances requires a plan. Management rearing its ugly head again.
Personal happiness
What is this doing here? Well, the better you manage your business the more time you have for personal fun. Simple, is it not?
Ethical standards
How a blogger handles the situation is gold. People tend to cross ethical lines when under pressure. For example the deadline for an article is close and you have not finished your entry. Taking a couple sentences here and there is not that bad, is it? Actually it is pretty lame if you really must know.
Diversity
The internet is global, not “what the blogger thinks is rightâ€. What I mean by this is the people reading a bloggers’ words will have very different backgrounds, opinions and beliefs. If time is taken to get to know the needs of readers, then the writer can learn how to balance this tightrope naturally with time. Offending readers is not a good thing.
Expansion
Many bloggers have multiple blogs but without management skills the blogger soon realizes the lack of time, energy and desire to maintain multiple blogs, even if the blogger is passionate about the topic. Why? Not effectively and efficiently using the tools and resources available. Or worse: the time is not available in the first place but applying management principles this would be known before launching multiple blogs.
Summary
There are many cases why management has benefit to bloggers. Looking at the bigger picture, understanding the hurdles and forming a plan helps accomplish the goal. That is what management is about, getting the job done the best possible way. Some bloggers luck out without planning but some people naturally plan…then it really is not luck, is it?
